I was driving my 1990 300Z TT that has 107K miles on it the other day, stopped and turned off car. After five minutes, I went to restart car and the starter just clunked. I tried a couple more times and it did it again. I thought what the hell it's never done is before. The battery is new so I thought maybe it's the battery connection. I was stopped on a slight hill and didn't have any tools with me so I pushed in the clutch, turned on the key and got rolling fast enough to pop the clutch in third gear and rear tires lock up. ok needs higher gear so I tried 4th, got going again popped it and it did same thing. by now i'm running out of my hill. I put it in 5th and tried again, same thing. I pulled off the road to a safe parking area. I sat in the car thinking the wheels should have been turning. I sat there trying to think who am I going to call. I get out and open the hood and look for anything obvious and found nothing. I got back in the car, started clicking the starter and after about 5 or 6 tries the engine started turning over and started up with a noise like metal piece or piece's were loose. I immediately turned the motor off, thinking the worst. By now my friend shows up. I explained the problem to him, restarted the car and he listened. He heard the noise coming from the rear of the engine block, possibly the clutch or starter area. I let the car run for 2-3 minutes, the oil pressure was ok and the noise went away. I turned off the car and let it sit for 2-3 minutes. Restarted again and it made the same clattering sound upon start-up and then stopped so I decided to drive it home, about 8 miles without any problems. Gauges read normal. I parked the car and let it cool down for the day. The next day I started it up and it made the same clattering noise but went away in less than 5 seconds. I have not driven it since. Listening to the noise on start-up I think it could be the starter, flywheel, clutch or possibly a turbo?? But I don't think the turbo would lock the differential... would it? I would appreciate ANY suggestions on how to troubleshoot. UPDATE: Yesterday (2-26-13) I finally got time to jack it up and pull the starter, it seamed ok, how do vou test them? then started to inspect the fly wheel and come upon what to appears to be a piece of metal lodged in the pressure plate... I don't think It belongs there. I think maybe the starter gear got hung on the metal tab? The big question a what is it? diaphragm arm? I will call you monday or tuesday.
